FABRICATION QUOTING GUIDE

Your Old Fabrication Quotes Are More Valuable Than They Look

Years of old quotes often contain the closest thing a fabrication business has to an estimating knowledge base. The problem is that the useful information is usually scattered across PDFs, spreadsheets, folders and individual memories.

What historical quotes can reveal

Past quotes contain much more than old sell prices. They can show how a customer buys, which materials recur, common quantities, recurring part families and the assumptions your estimators used at the time.

Do not blindly copy the old price

A historical quote is evidence, not today's answer. Material, wages, subcontracting, freight and machine utilisation can change. Good quote-history software should show the old context and the differences in current inputs.

Connect history with actual job results

Quote history becomes more powerful when completed-job actual costs are available. A previous job that looked profitable at quoting stage may have finished with a very different margin. That is the lesson the next estimator needs to see.

Build customer-specific knowledge

Some customers have recurring requirements, finish preferences, packaging expectations or commercial patterns. Keeping those jobs together makes future estimating faster without forcing every customer into one generic pricing model.
